ABOUT
René van Zundert (1981) is a versatile visual artist working at the intersection of film, photography, and education. With a sharp eye for real-life stories, he captures powerful narratives rooted in the urban reality of Rotterdam-Zuid. The lives of people who often remain invisible in mainstream media are a constant source of inspiration for him. His work reflects a genuine curiosity about other cultures and worlds.
Van Zundert gained recognition through socially engaged documentaries such as BARS (2017), 180CC (2018, EO), and MONDIG ZUID (2021, EO). These films have been screened at both national and international festivals, with 180CCwinning the award for Best Dutch Short Documentary at Cinekid in 2019. His films give voice to young people and communities who are often underrepresented.
In addition to his artistic work, René has been actively involved in education since 2012. In collaboration with various organizations, he develops tailor-made film workshops for primary, secondary, and higher education. His educational approach closely aligns with themes relevant to young people, such as identity, poverty, mental health, and social justice. By addressing taboos and encouraging open dialogue, he connects with young audiences and empowers them to speak up.
One of his standout projects is Young Money, an educational initiative based on the documentary BARS. This workshop targets youth aged 12 to 24 and opens up conversations about financial choices and consequences. Together with protagonist Michael, René explores the film's story and creates a safe space where participants can talk freely about money. Optional components like a digital quiz or debate can be added to tailor the experience to different audiences.
René also leads film workshops that introduce students to the world of documentary filmmaking, helping them explore social themes and develop their own creative voice. For the second consecutive year, he is part of the educational program of the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), where he guides students in making their own short films.
Through his work, René van Zundert builds bridges between art, society, and education. He doesn’t just inspire young people to watch – he empowers them to speak, create, and become part of the conversation.
